Our client and partner Renew Home — together with Sunrun and Tesla — announced a framework to deliver more than 16 gigawatts of fast, flexible power for data centers and large loads: one of the largest distributed-capacity commitments ever assembled in the United States.
The announcement. The three companies will aggregate hundreds of thousands of home battery systems from Sunrun and Tesla with more than 8 million smart thermostats and connected devices managed by Renew Home. Together they form a distributed power plant that can be deployed in months — with no additional hardware, interconnection queues, water, or land.
The capacity. The framework spans 16.8 GW nationwide — 6.2 GW in the West, 4.6 GW in the Central region, and 6 GW in the East. In Virginia's Data Center Alley, more than 300 megawatts are available immediately, growing to an expected 500 megawatts by 2030, with over a gigawatt committed to PJM if accepted into its Reliability Backstop Process.
Why it matters. AI-driven data center growth is colliding with a grid that can't build new generation fast enough. "The grid of the 1800s cannot power the innovation of 2026," said Sunrun CEO Mary Powell. Analysis from The Brattle Group projects that better grid utilization of this kind could reduce U.S. electricity bills by $110–$170 billion over the next decade — while paying participating households for the flexibility their homes already have.
Renew Home's role. Renew Home operates the largest residential virtual power plant portfolio in North America. CEO Ben Brown put it simply: "This group of residential-focused energy companies can help them accomplish that goal."
